INTRODUCTION

In our second edition of collaboration with BlueScope, TinkTank was approached to carry out a project of three parts, each catering to different groups of employees in their organisation. The training courses customised for BlueScope this time were:

  •  Talent Development Programme.
  • Personal Effectiveness and Time Management.
  • Talent Development
  • Leadership in Cross-Functional Team
  •  Programme.

THE ORGANISATION’S CHALLENGES

Before introducing potential leaders to their soon-to-be roles, BlueScope intentionally sent these individuals to TinkTank to begin their development process. They identified that sending individuals blindly into senior leadership roles, although they were already displaying high performance and high motivation, may be hard-hitting on them. Therefore, a gradual introduction took place to ensure they were well-versed on skills and important knowledge that will fast track them to being better senior leaders.

On the other hand, junior executives can be jittery at the pressure of having to perform, especially at a big corporation like BlueScope, thus triggering stress and anxiety in once healthy-minded individuals. BlueScope wanted to tackle this problem by ensuring that their executives are able to see how time management and strategizing based on priorities can help eliminate their worries. Plus, an alert and present executive plays an important role in bringing the company to new heights.

Thirdly, BlueScope understood that large corporations see the need for employees from different departments coming together to work as a team. Dysfunctionality is the usual outcome in this case, but the existence of cross-functional teams cannot be avoided. Therefore, a training programme was devised to guide leaders and senior members on how to work with individuals of different personalities, melding them all together to create effectivity, efficiency and bring about positive change for BlueScope.

THE TINKTANK SOLUTION

A 2-day course was developed for the Talent Development Programme on selected 15 individuals. Upon completing the modules listed below, each containing sub-modules, the participants were engaged in a 2 hour group coaching session online 6 weeks after the completion of training. Individuals were introduced to methods of better communication, developing a work culture and also metamodeling among other things.

BlueScope also selected 25 junior executives who can benefit from the Personal Effectiveness and Time Management course. This course also ran for 2 days at the BlueScope headquarters. This training explores the importance of taking charge in order to achieve desired results, creating affirmations for success and developing habits that can drive focus all day, every day.

BlueScope sent 20 leaders and senior members of cross-functional teams to the Leadership in Cross-Functional Teams training. Their purpose was the enrich BlueScope by learning about matrix leadership, managing a virtual team, developing mental models, conflict management and how to lead by situation. This course went on for 3 days and also included a virtual 2-hour group coaching session 6 weeks after the training was completed.

THE OUTCOME

Talent Development Programme

Carefully selected future leaders were able to display better comprehension and implementation of what good leadership behaviours are. These individuals also understood the different concepts of being a leader versus being a manager. The course resulted in self-assertiveness of the participants so they were able to understand their own beliefs, rules, values and patterns. Using this newfound understanding, participants then defined their own qualities and strengths. They also displayed an improvement of communication skills and interpersonal skills, thus they were able to drive and inspire others to work towards BlueScope’s goals as they lead by example.

Personal Effectiveness and Time Management

In this programme, junior executives who participated were able to be more holistic with their approach when it comes to work management. By taking into account all factors of their lives, they can be more confident about their roles and device a better action plan to deal with their own insecurities. The course also enlightened these individuals on how strategic and tactical approaches can up their level of productivity. This includes learning how to tell what is urgent and what is important, executing each task at an appropriate time and discovering a performance sequence.

Leadership in Cross-Functional Teams

Participants, upon completion of this course, displayed a higher understanding of how to create a well-balanced team consisting of very different individuals. These leaders were also able to apply the most appropriate leadership skills depending on the situation they are in. They displayed comprehension of team members’ duty and their individualistic personalities, thus being able to guide the group to work flexibly, have better communication and strive for improvement on teamwork. By applying strong listening skills and positive communication, these senior members of BlueScope go back to their working world as better influencers who can create a highly motivational environment for better work outcome.
