INTRODUCTION

BlueScope is a renowned name in the industry of construction. This Australian company provides top-notch solutions for construction plans and also serve as the leading supplier of steel-based products in Asia. With operations that began in 2002, BlueScope has a reach that extends all the way to North America.
BlueScope approached TinkTank to conduct a Business System Analyst Foundation Programme. The programme is aimed at training 30 of their Business Intelligence Analyst and Business System Analyst from the Southeast Asian countries of Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

THE ORGANISATION’S CHALLENGES

BlueScope needed to understand where their current team stood when it comes to knowledge related to analysing business systems and project management. Therefore, a pre-assessment was carried out and this also served as a measuring tape for TinkTank and BlueScope to gauge the success of the programme.

Although BlueScope has equipped its employees with all sorts of information on the company and their field of work, they are not able to gauge how useful they have been to their analysts. BlueScope also wanted to ensure that their employees were equipped with soft skills such as analytical skills, communication skills, problem solving skills and basic skills. BlueScope and TinkTank both see the importance of having these skills when working as a team and also acknowledge that any employee equipped with soft skills are much able at their job.

THE TINKTANK SOLUTION

Upon understanding the industry and the roles of the analysts in their workplace, TINKTANK assesses the outcome of the one hour pre-assessment questions. Once content is developed, TINKTANK emailed these materials to BlueScope two days before the course takes place.

During the 3-day course, TINKTANK works on ensuring that participants fully understand the basics of their industry and their job scope as Business Analysts. A defined understanding of strategic processes and investigation techniques will be taught in the course. In fact, participants will be educated on solid techniques for each and every step of the projects they uptake. Various case studies are also presented to participants so they have a hands-on opportunity of implementing what they had learned.

Day 1 Course Overview

Each day is kicked off with reviewing lessons in the previous day to improve retention and act as a refresh button before tackling the new day. Participants are taught about modelling business systems and processes as well as steps to take when dealing with requirements. Throughout the course, participants will be equipped with an Individual Learning Journal so that they are able to document key learning points. All this will also be useful so they can track their own development and be motivated when they see how far they have come after completing training.

Day 2 Course Overview

On the final day of the course, participants were presented with a written assessment in order to gauge their level of progress with the training provided.

BlueScope sent 20 leaders and senior members of cross-functional teams to the Leadership in Cross-Functional Teams training. Their purpose was the enrich BlueScope by learning about matrix leadership, managing a virtual team, developing mental models, conflict management and how to lead by situation. This course went on for 3 days and also included a virtual 2-hour group coaching session 6 weeks after the training was completed.
